Top awards for celebrating equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace
December 1, 2024Romey Norton works for Awards Writers as head of detail. She recently attended the Wakefield Business Awards as part of the team as our chief wordsmith, Louise Turner, is chair of the judging panel.
The glitz and glamour of the awards industry is something I’ve found myself in recently. From behind the scenes, I’ve experienced the time, effort, and energy that goes into crafting compelling entries and the benefits of winning awards. But going to an awards ceremony wasn’t something I thought I’d ever do. When I got the chance, I snapped it up and it wasn’t what I expected – it was better!
So, if it’s your first time going to an awards event and you’re not sure what to expect, this blog should give you an insight into how the evening might go.
Glamour
Awards really are an event where everyone goes all out. If you think you’re underdressed, you probably are and if you think you’re overdressed you’re probably not. People wear tiaras. It’s a wonderful way to make yourself feel your best. We’ve written a blog about what to wear at an awards ceremony if you need some hints and tips. Fundamentally, wear something that makes you feel great and you won’t be far wrong.
Photo opportunities
Not only are you looking your best, but the venue is too. A lot of money goes into making the event the highlight of your year. There are many photo opportunities – usually with professional photographers – and space to create all the social media content you need. Awards organisers often publicise a hashtag and love people to post about having a great time before, during and after the event.
Bar and entertainment
A bar is usually open throughout the evening and entertainment can be anything from magicians to casino style games. It could be useful to bring some cash as well as some awards have a way to donate to charity as part of the format.
Famous host
Depending on the awards, there is usually a guest host presenting, and they’re most likely someone famous with cracking jokes and the ability to control a crowd (see next point).
Audience control
Maybe it’s all the excitement and booze mixed together, but audiences can get rather rowdy, so be prepared to handle some noise and potential awkwardness. You can check out our blog on award etiquette for some gentle pointers.
Speeches
If you win, you might have to give a speech but not always. Take your lead from the host who will offer you the mic if you’re expected to speak – and definitely won’t if you aren’t! If you do need to say something, keep it short and sweet (no need to thank your mum – unless she was genuinely part of the award-winning effort!).
Dinner
Yes, you’re fed (unless it’s hosted online), usually a three or four-course meal, with tables usually consisting of 10 or 12 guests. Don’t forget to let organisers know beforehand if you have any dietary needs.
Time
One thing I will say is that award ceremonies are long. Not in a bad way, but if you’re tired, I’d get on the espresso martinis as you’re in for a long night.
DJ/dancefloor
That’s right. After everyone’s accepted their awards and eaten their food, at some awards ceremonies the floor is opened up and everyone’s invited to dance. You don’t have to, of course, but your team could turn this into a night out.
A few final top tips for awards ceremonies
Take plenty of business cards and make sure you network. It’s a great chance to connect with people that could become valuable contacts.
Bring some cash. Most awards will feature a charity collection or raffle mid-way through dinner, with an envelope on the table for donations.
Support and respect your fellow nominees. Whether you win or lose, be gracious, and don’t spoil the fun.
Celebrate your team. If you win, take your team on stage with you, you wouldn’t be where you are without them.
Will I go to an award ceremony again? Absolutely, yes. So, if you’re one of our clients and have a spare seat, give us a shout.
